Entalpia este un potențial termodinamic definit, desemnat prin litera "H", care constă în energia internă a sistemului, plus produsul presiunii și volumului sistemului: Deoarece entalpia, H, constă în energie internă, U, plus produsul a presiunii și a volumului sistemului, care sunt toate funcțiile stării sistemului termodinamic, entalpia este o funcție de stat. Unitatea de măsură pentru entalpie în Sistemul Internațional de Unități este Joule, dar alte unități istorice, convenționale sunt încă în uz, cum ar fi unitatea termică britanică și calorii. Entalpia este expresia preferată a schimbărilor de energie ale sistemului în numeroase măsurători chimice, biologice și fizice, deoarece simplifică anumite descrieri ale transferului de energie. Modificarea entalpiei reprezintă energia transferată în mediul înconjurător la presiune constantă prin expansiune sau încălzire. Entalpia totală, H, a unui sistem nu poate fi măsurată direct. Aceeași situație există și în mecanica clasică: numai o schimbare sau o diferență de energie are sens fizic.
