O epocă este o perioadă de timp marcată de caracter distinctiv, de evenimente, de schimbări pe pământ etc. Când este folosit în știință, de exemplu geologia, o epocă denotă o perioadă de timp bine definită de durată arbitrară dar bine definită, cum ar fi de exemplu Era mezozoică de la 252 Ma-66 Ma, delimitată de un eveniment de început și de un eveniment final. Când este folosit în istoria socială, epocile pot, de exemplu, să denotă o perioadă a domniei unui monarh. În limbajul colocvial, epoca denotă o perioadă mai lungă de timp, înainte și după care practicile sau moda se schimbă într-o măsură semnificativă. Când epoca este extinsă la un sistem de calendar, este cunoscută ca o epocă a calendarului. În sanscrită sau în epoca culturilor indiene se numesc Yugas.
