Prima definiție a ergativului din dicționar denotă un tip de verb care are același substantiv ca și un obiect direct sau ca subiect, cu un înțeles echivalent. Astfel, "fuzeta" este un verb ergative: "A fuzionat luminile" și "Luminile topite" au un înțeles echivalent. O altă definiție a ergativului denotă un caz de substantive în anumite limbi, de exemplu, Inuktitut sau Basque, marcând un substantiv folosit interschimbabil fie ca obiect direct al unui verb tranzitiv, fie ca subiect al unui verb intransist.
