Exarh
În Imperiul Bizantin, un exarh era un guvernator cu autoritate extinsă peste o provincie la o oarecare distanță de capitala Constantinopolului. Situația dominantă îl implica frecvent în operațiuni militare. În Bisericile creștine din răsărit, termenul exarh are două utilizări distincte: deputatul unui patriarh sau episcop care deține autoritatea asupra altor episcopi fără a fi patriarh; sau un episcop numit peste un grup de credincioși care încă nu este suficient de mare sau suficient de organizat pentru a fi constituit o eparhie / eparhie.
