În biologie și ecologie, extincția este sfârșitul unui organism sau al unui grup de organisme, în mod normal o specie. Momentul dispariției este, în general, considerat a fi moartea ultimului individ al speciei, deși capacitatea de a reproduce și de a se reface poate fi pierdut înainte de acest punct. Deoarece o gamă potențială a speciilor poate fi foarte mare, determinarea acestui moment este dificilă și se face, de obicei, retrospectiv.
