Fosilele sunt rămășițele conservate sau urme de animale, plante și alte organisme din trecutul îndepărtat. Totalitatea fosilelor, atât descoperite, cât și nedescoperite, și plasarea lor în formațiuni rocilor fosilifere și straturi sedimentare este cunoscută ca înregistrarea fosilă. Studiul fosililor în timpul geologic, modul în care s-au format și relațiile evolutive dintre taxoni sunt unele dintre cele mai importante funcții ale științei paleontologiei. Un astfel de specimen conservat este numit "fosil" dacă este mai vechi decât o vârstă minimă, cel mai adesea data arbitrară de 10.000 de ani. De aceea, fosilele variază în vîrstă de la cei mai tineri de la începutul Epocii Holocenelor până la cei mai vechi de la Aron Eon, până la vârsta de 3,48 miliarde de ani. Observarea faptului că anumite fosile au fost asociate cu anumite straturi de rocă au determinat geologii timpurii să recunoască un calendar geologic în secolul al XIX-lea. Dezvoltarea tehnicilor de datare radiometrică la începutul secolului al XX-lea a permis geologilor să determine vârsta numerică sau "absolută" a diferitelor straturi și, prin urmare, fosilele incluse.
