Gradient
În matematică, gradientul este o generalizare a conceptului obișnuit de derivat la funcțiile mai multor variabile. Dacă f este o funcție diferențiată, scalară, a mai multor variabile, gradientul său este vectorul a cărui componente sunt derivatele parțiale n ale f. Aceasta este, prin urmare, o funcție de valoare a vectorului. Similar cu derivatul obișnuit, gradientul reprezintă panta tangentei graficului funcției. Mai precis, gradientul indică în direcția celei mai mari rate de creștere a funcției și a magnitudinii sale o pantă a graficului în acea direcție. Componentele gradientului în coordonate sunt coeficienții variabilelor din ecuația spațiului tangent la grafic. Această proprietate caracteristică a gradientului îi permite să fie definită independent de alegerea sistemului de coordonate, ca câmp vectorial ale cărui componente într-un sistem de coordonate se vor transforma atunci când merg de la un sistem de coordonate la altul. Jacobianul este generalizarea gradientului pentru funcțiile valorii vectoriale a mai multor variabile și a hărților diferențiate între spațiile euclidane sau, în general, variatele.

Prima definiție a gradientului din dicționar este de asemenea numită: grad. o parte a unei căi ferate, a unui drum etc. care se înclină în sus sau în jos; înclinare. O altă definiție a gradientului este de asemenea numită: grad. o măsură a unei astfel de pante, și anume raportul dintre distanța verticală dintre două puncte de pe panta și distanța orizontală dintre ele. Gradientul este, de asemenea, o măsură a modificării unor cantități fizice, cum ar fi temperatura sau potențialul electric, pe o distanță specificată.
