O bancă este un intermediar financiar care acceptă depozite și canalizează aceste depozite în activități de creditare, fie direct prin împrumut, fie indirect prin intermediul piețelor de capital. O bancă leagă clienții care au deficite de capital și clienții cu surplusuri de capital. Datorită importanței lor în sistemul financiar și influenței asupra economiilor naționale, băncile sunt foarte reglementate în majoritatea țărilor. Majoritatea națiunilor au instituționat un sistem cunoscut sub denumirea de rezerve bancare parțiale. Acestea sunt, în general, supuse cerințelor minime de capital pe baza unui set internațional de standarde de capital, cunoscut sub numele de Acordul de la Basel. Banca, în sensul său modern, a evoluat în secolul al XIV-lea în orașele bogate din Italia Renașterii, dar în multe privințe a fost o continuare a ideilor și conceptelor de creditare și de împrumut care au rădăcini în lumea antică. În istoria bancară, o serie de dinastii bancare - în special Medicis, Fuggerii, Welsers, Berenbergs și Rothschilds - au jucat un rol central în multe secole. Cea mai veche bancă de retail existente este Monte dei Paschi di Siena, în timp ce cea mai veche bancă comercială existentă este Berenberg Bank.
