Un inițiator pirotehnic este un dispozitiv care conține o compoziție pirotehnică folosită în principal pentru aprinderea altor materiale, mai dificil de aprins, de ex. termiti, generatoare de gaz și rachete cu combustibil solid. Numele este adesea folosit și pentru compozițiile în sine. Inițiatorii pirotehnici sunt deseori controlați electric, de ex. folosind un bridge bridge sau o rezistență de punte. Ele sunt oarecum similare cu capacele de sablare sau alte detonatoare, dar ele diferă prin faptul că nu există intenția de a produce un val de șoc.
