Lancetele, cunoscute și sub denumirea de amphioxus, cuprind aproximativ treizeci și două de specii de pești chordați sub formă de pești, cu o distribuție globală în marea temperată și tropicală superficială, găsită de obicei pe jumătate îngropată în nisip. Ei sunt reprezentanții moderni ai subfilei Cephalochordata, considerată anterior ca fiind grupul sora al craniților. În Asia, acestea sunt recoltate comercial ca produse alimentare pentru oameni și animale domestice. Ele sunt un obiect important de studiu în zoologie, deoarece oferă indicații despre originea vertebratelor. Lancetele servesc drept un punct de comparație interesant pentru urmărirea evoluției și adaptării vertebratelor. Desi lantuletele se despart de vertebrate mai mult de 520 milioane de ani in urma, genomii lor detin indicii despre evolutie, in special modul in care vertebratele au folosit gene vechi pentru noi functii. Ele sunt considerate ca fiind similare formelor vertebrate arhetipale. Amfioxiformele sunt adesea numite "amphioxus". Amphioxus este un sinonim învechit al genului Branchiostoma. Este folosit ca un nume comun împreună cu "lancelet", în special în limba engleză. Genomul lanceletului din Florida a fost secvențiat.
