Lipide
Lipidele sunt un grup de molecule care apar în mod natural, care includ grăsimi, ceruri, steroli, vitamine solubile în grăsimi, monogliceride, digliceride, trigliceride, fosfolipide și altele. Principalele funcții biologice ale lipidelor includ stocarea energiei, semnalizarea și acționarea ca componente structurale ale membranelor celulare. Lipidele au aplicații în industria cosmetică și alimentară, precum și în domeniul nanotehnologiei. Lipidele pot fi definite în mare măsură ca molecule mici hidrofobe sau amfifile; natura amfifilă a unor lipide le permite să formeze structuri cum ar fi vezicule, lipozomi sau membrane într-un mediu apos. Lipidele biologice provin în întregime sau parțial din două tipuri distincte de subunități biochimice sau "blocuri de construcție": grupări cetoacil și izopren. Folosind această abordare, lipidele pot fi împărțite în opt categorii: acizi grași, glicerolipide, glicerofosfolipide, sfingolipide, zaharolipide și policetide; și lipidele sterolice și lipidele prenol. Deși termenul lipid este uneori folosit ca sinonim pentru grăsimi, grăsimile sunt o subgrupă de lipide denumite trigliceride.
