La vertebrate, mandibula, maxilarul inferior sau maxilarul este un os care formează craniul cu craniul. În peștii cu lobi și în tetrapodele fosile timpurii, osul omologic cu mandibula mamiferelor este doar cea mai mare dintre câteva oase din maxilarul inferior. La astfel de animale, se face referire ca la osul dentar și formează corpul suprafeței exterioare a maxilarului. Este mărginită mai jos de un număr de oase splenice, în timp ce unghiul maxilarului este format dintr-un os unghiular inferior și un os suprangular chiar deasupra acestuia. După cum sugerează și numele, majoritatea dinților sunt atașați de dentar, dar există de obicei și dinți pe oasele coronoide și, uneori, și pe prearticulare. Acest model primitiv complex a fost, totuși, simplificat la diferite grade în marea majoritate a vertebratelor, deoarece oasele s-au topit sau au dispărut în întregime.
