O hartă este o reprezentare simbolică care evidențiază relațiile dintre elementele acelui spațiu, cum ar fi obiectele, regiunile și temele. Multe hărți sunt reprezentări statice bidimensionale, geometrice precise ale spațiului tridimensional, în timp ce altele sunt dinamice sau interactive, chiar și tridimensionale. Deși cel mai frecvent utilizate pentru a descrie geografia, hărțile pot reprezenta orice spațiu, real sau imaginar, fără a ține seama de context sau de scară; de exemplu. maparea creierului, maparea ADN-ului și cartografierea extraterestră. Deși cele mai vechi hărți cunoscute sunt din ceruri, hărțile geografice ale teritoriului au o tradiție foarte lungă și există din cele mai vechi timpuri. Cuvântul "hartă" provine din latina medievală Mappa mundi, în care mappa însemna servetel sau pânză și mundi lumea. Astfel, "hartă" a devenit termen scurt, referindu-se la o reprezentare bidimensională a suprafeței lumii.
