Banii reprezintă orice obiect sau înregistrare verificabilă, care este în general acceptată ca plată pentru bunuri și servicii și rambursarea datoriilor într-o anumită țară sau context socio-economic. Principalele funcții ale banilor se disting ca: un mijloc de schimb; o unitate de cont; un magazin de valoare; și, ocazional, în trecut, un standard de plată amânată. Orice tip de obiect sau înregistrări verificabile care îndeplinesc aceste funcții pot fi considerate bani. Banii sunt istoric un fenomen de piață emergentă care creează un ban de marfă, dar aproape toate sistemele bancare contemporane se bazează pe banii fiți.
