În genetică, o mutație este o schimbare a secvenței nucleotidice a genomului unui organism, a unui virus sau a unui element genetic extrachromozomal. Mutațiile rezultă din deteriorarea nereparabilă a genomului ADN sau a ARN-ului, a erorilor în procesul de replicare sau de inserția sau ștergerea de segmente ale ADN-ului prin elemente genetice mobile. Mutațiile pot sau nu pot produce schimbări discernebile în caracteristicile observabile ale unui organism. Mutațiile joacă un rol atât în procesele biologice normale, cât și în cele anormale, inclusiv: evoluția, cancerul și dezvoltarea sistemului imunitar. Mutația poate duce la mai multe tipuri diferite de schimbări în secvențe. Mutațiile în gene nu pot avea nici un efect, nu modifică produsul unei gene sau nu pot preveni funcționarea corectă sau completă a genei. Mutațiile pot apărea și în regiunile nongenice. Un studiu privind variațiile genetice între diferite specii de Drosophila sugerează că, dacă o mutație modifică o proteină produsă de o genă, rezultatul este probabil să fie dăunător, cu un procent estimat de 70% din polimorfismele de aminoacizi care au efecte dăunătoare, iar restul fiind fie neutru, fie slab benefic.
