Statul de drept este principiul legal potrivit căruia legea ar trebui să guverneze o națiune, și nu un funcționar guvernamental individual. Se referă în primul rând la influența și autoritatea legii în societate, în special ca o constrângere asupra comportamentului, inclusiv comportamentul oficialilor guvernamentali. Această expresie poate fi trasată până în secolul al XVI-lea și a fost popularizată în secolul al XIX-lea de juristul britanic A. V. Dicey. Conceptul era familiar filosofilor antici, cum ar fi Aristotel, care scria "Legea trebuie să guverneze". Statul de drept implică faptul că fiecare cetățean este supus legii, inclusiv legilor înșiși.
