Susanna Centlivre a scris o piesă de succes, "The Busie Body", care a fost interpretată pentru prima oară în 1709 și a fost reînviată de mai multe ori. Este o farsă în care Marplot intervine în afacerile romantice ale prietenilor săi și, în ciuda faptului că este bine înțeles, îi frustrează. Caracterizarea lui Marplot ca fiind o persoană plină de activități, a cărei "plăcere principală este cunoașterea afacerii tuturor" a fost atât de populară încât a apărut ca personaj de titlu într-o continuare, Marplot. Numele este un cuvânt-mar / complot - și a trecut în limba ca un eponim sau personificare de acest tip.
