Sistemul Padrone era un sistem de contractare a forței de muncă folosit de mai multe grupuri de imigranți pentru a găsi locuri de muncă în Statele Unite, mai ales italieni, dar și greci, chinezi, japonezi și mexicani. Cuvântul "padrone" este un cuvânt italian care înseamnă "șef" sau "manager" atunci când este tradus în limba engleză. Sistemul era o rețea complexă de relații de afaceri formate pentru a satisface o nevoie tot mai mare de lucrători calificați și necalificați. Padronii erau brokeri de muncă, în general imigranți sau americani de primă generație, care au acționat ca intermediari între lucrătorii imigranți și angajatori. Călătoriile transoceanice au devenit mai eficiente și mai puțin costisitoare din cauza introducerii vaporului în anii 1860. Acest lucru a făcut agresiuni ale agenților forței de muncă atractive pentru persoanele care căutau salarii mai bune, dar nu doreau să facă Statele Unite ale Americii ca domiciliu permanent. În S.U.A., aceste "păsări de trecere" au fost angajate de la Coasta de Est până la coasta de vest și de la frontiera mexicană până la granița canadiană.
