Pelagius
Pelagius a fost probabil un ascet roman, nascut probabil in engleza, care sa opus ideii de predestinare si a afirmat o versiune puternica a doctrinei liberului arbitru. El a fost acuzat de Augustin de Hippo și de alții de a nega nevoia de ajutor divin în efectuarea de lucrări bune. Pentru el, singurul har necesar era declararea legii; oamenii nu erau răniți de păcatul lui Adam și erau perfect capabili să îndeplinească legea în afară de orice ajutor divin. Susținătorii Lui îi citează pe Deuteronom 24:16 să nege păcatul original. El a negat doctrina mai specifică a păcatului original, așa cum a fost dezvoltată de Augustin. Pelagius a fost declarat eretic de către Consiliul de la Carthage. Interpretarea sa a unei doctrine a liberei voințe a devenit cunoscută sub numele de pelagianism. El a fost bine educat, fluent atât în greacă, cât și în latină, și a învățat în teologie. A petrecut timp ca asceți, concentrându-se pe ascetismul practic, pe care învățăturile lui îl reflectă în mod clar.
