Puberta este procesul de schimbări fizice prin care corpul unui copil se maturizează într-un corp adulți capabil de reproducere sexuală pentru a permite fertilizarea. Ea este inițiată de semnale hormonale de la creier la gonade: ovarele la o fată, testiculele la un băiat. Ca răspuns la semnale, gonadele produc hormoni care stimulează libidoul și creșterea, funcția și transformarea creierului, a oaselor, a mușchiului, a sângelui, a pielii, a părului, a sânilor și a organelor sexuale. Creșterea fizică - înălțime și greutate - accelerează în prima jumătate a pubertății și este încheiată atunci când copilul a dezvoltat un corp adult. Până la maturizarea capacităților lor de reproducere, diferențele fizice pre-pubertale dintre băieți și fete sunt genitalia, penisul și vaginul. În medie, fetele încep pubertatea la vârste cuprinse între 10 și 11 ani; băieți la vârste cuprinse între 11 și 12 ani. De obicei, fetele completează pubertatea la vârste cuprinse între 15 și 17 ani, în timp ce băieții împlinesc de obicei puberta la vârste cuprinse între 16 și 17 ani. Reperul major al pubertății pentru femei este menarche, debutul menstruației, care apare în medie între 12-13 ani; pentru bărbați, este prima ejaculare, care apare în medie la vârsta de 13 ani.
