Transparență și translucență
În domeniul opțiunii, transparența este proprietatea fizică de a permite lumina să treacă prin material fără a fi împrăștiată. La scară macroscopică, se poate spune că fotonii urmează legea lui Snell. Translucența este un super-set de transparență: permite trecerea lumina, dar nu respectă neapărat legea lui Snell; fotonii pot fi împrăștiați la oricare dintre cele două interfețe unde există o schimbare a indicelui de refracție sau intern. Cu alte cuvinte, un mediu translucid permite transportul luminii, în timp ce un mediu transparent nu numai că permite transportul luminii, ci permite formarea imaginii. Proprietatea opusă a translucenței este opacitatea. Materialele transparente apar clar, cu aspectul general al unei culori sau orice combinație care duce la un spectru strălucit de fiecare culoare. Atunci când lumina întâlnește un material, acesta poate interacționa cu el în mai multe moduri diferite. Aceste interacțiuni depind de lungimea de undă a luminii și de natura materialului.
