O stea de coajă, denumită și variabilă Gamma Cassiopeiae, este o stea având un spectru care prezintă caracteristici care indică un disc circumsilitar de gaz ce înconjoară steaua de la ecuator. Acestea prezintă variații neregulate în luminozitatea lor datorită fluxului de materie. Stelele coajelor sunt rotatoare rapide, oferind o explicație parțială asupra mecanismului, dar stelele coajă sunt încă considerate enigmatice. Steluțele Shell aparțin tipurilor spectrale O7.5 până la F5, însă spectrele lor sunt caracterizate de linii de absorbție enorme, datorită rotației rapide, iar discul contribuie și la alte particularități spectrale. Vitezele de rotație sunt de aproximativ 200-250 km / s, nu departe de punctul în care accelerația de rotație ar perturba steaua. Spectrele și calitățile generale ale stelelor de coajă sunt greu de interpretat, deoarece caracteristicile spectrale normale sunt suprapuse cu emisii variabile, astfel încât clasa de luminozitate și clasa spectrală exactă ar putea fi ușor interpretate greșit.
