Sindromul clădirii bolnave este folosit pentru a descrie situațiile în care ocupanții clădirilor au efecte acute de sănătate și de confort care par a fi legate de timpul petrecut într-o clădire, însă nu pot fi identificate nici o boală sau cauză specifică. Un raport al Organizației Mondiale a Sănătății din 1984 a sugerat că până la 30% din clădirile noi și remodelate din întreaga lume pot face obiectul plângerilor legate de calitatea slabă a aerului din interior. Printre cauzele cauzate de boală se numără adesea defectele din sistemele de încălzire, ventilație și aer condiționat. Alte cauze au fost atribuite contaminanților produși prin evacuarea unor tipuri de materiale de construcție, a compușilor organici volatili, a mucegaiurilor, a ventilației necorespunzătoare de evacuare a ozonului, a produselor chimice industriale ușoare utilizate în interiorul acestora sau a lipsei adecvate de admisie a aerului proaspăt / filtrarea aerului. Simptomele sunt deseori tratate după îmbunătățirea ratei generale de schimbare a aerului proaspăt cu aerul exterior, însă noul obiectiv de construcție ecologică ar trebui să evite în primul rând majoritatea surselor de probleme SBS, să minimizeze utilizarea în curs de desfășurare a compușilor de curățare COV și eliminarea condițiilor care încurajează creșterea mucegaiului alergenic.

Sick building syndrome is used to describe situations in which building occupants experience acute health and comfort effects that appear to be linked to time spent in a building, but no specific illness or cause can be identified. A 1984 World Health Organization report suggested up to 30% of new and remodeled buildings worldwide may be subject of complaints related to poor indoor air quality. Sick building causes are frequently pinned down to flaws in the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Other causes have been attributed to contaminants produced by outgassing of some types of building materials, volatile organic compounds, molds, improper exhaust ventilation of ozone, light industrial chemicals used within, or lack of adequate fresh-air intake/air filtration. Symptoms are often dealt with after the fact by boosting the overall turn-over rate of fresh air exchange with the outside air, but the new green building design goal should be able to avoid most of the SBS problem sources in the first place, minimize the ongoing use of VOC cleaning compounds, and eliminate conditions that encourage allergenic mold growth.
