Spirogyra este un gen de alge verde fieros de carafit de ordinul Zygnematales, numit pentru aranjamentul elicoidal sau spiralat al cloroplastelor care este diagnosticul genului. Acesta se găsește frecvent în zonele cu apă dulce și există mai mult de 400 de specii de Spirogyra în lume. Spirogyra măsoară aproximativ 10 până la 100 μm în lățime și poate întinde centimetri lungime.
