Un stareț este un bătrân al unei mănăstiri ortodoxe ruse care funcționează ca sfătuitor venerat și profesor. Bătrânii sau părinții spirituali sunt lideri spirituali carismatici, a căror înțelepciune provine de la Dumnezeu, obținută din experiența ascetică. Se crede că prin lupta ascetică, rugăciunea și isihasmul, Duhul Sfânt dă daruri speciale bătrânului, inclusiv capacitatea de a vindeca, profeți și, cel mai important, dă o îndrumare și o direcție spirituală eficace. Bătrânii sunt priviți ca fiind o inspirație pentru credincioși și un exemplu de virtute sfântă, credință statornică și pace spirituală. Bătrânii nu sunt numiți de nici o autoritate; ei sunt pur și simplu recunoscuți de credincioși ca fiind oameni "ai Duhului". Un bătrân, atunci când nu se află în rugăciune sau în izolare voluntară, primește vizitatori și petrece timp în conversație cu ei, oferind o binecuvântare și mărturisire și rugându-se. Oamenii de multe ori cer pe bătrân rugăciunile intercediare, crezând că rugăciunea unui bătrân este deosebit de eficientă. Confesiunile personale față de bătrâni sunt încurajate, deși nu toate sunt hirotonite la preoție.
