Sultan
Sultanul este un titlu nobil cu mai multe semnificații istorice. Inițial, a fost un limbaj abstract din limba arabă, care înseamnă "putere", "autoritate", "conducere" derivată din substantivul verbal سلطة sulṭah, adică "autoritate" sau "putere". Mai târziu, a ajuns să fie folosit ca titlu al anumitor conducători care au susținut aproape suveranitatea completă în termeni practici, fără a pretinde califatul global sau pentru a se referi la un guvernator puternic al unei provincii din cadrul califatului. Dinastia și terenurile conduse de un sultan sunt numite sultanate. O formă feminină, folosită de occidentali, este sultana sau sultana; deși însăși stilul interpretează greșit rolurile soțiilor sultanilor. Într-o uzură similară, soția unui câmp-mareșal german ar putea fi numită Feldmarschallin. Liderii rare de sex feminin din istoria musulmană sunt în mod corect cunoscuți drept "sultanele".
