Puroi
Pus este un exudat, de obicei alb-galben, galben sau galben-maron, format la locul inflamației în timpul infecției. O acumulare de puroi într-un spațiu de țesut închis este cunoscută ca un abces, în timp ce o colecție vizibilă de puroi în interiorul sau sub epidermă este cunoscută ca un pustule sau cos. Pus constă într-un fluid subțire, bogat în proteine, cunoscut sub numele de puric lichid, și leucocite moarte din răspunsul imun al organismului. În timpul infecției, macrofagele eliberează citokinele care declanșează neutrofilele pentru a căuta locul infecției prin chemotaxie. Acolo, neutrofilele înghite și distrug bacteriile și bacteriile rezistă răspunsului imun prin eliberarea de toxine numite leucocidine. Pe măsură ce neutrofilele mor de la toxine și de bătrânețe, ele sunt distruse de macrofage, formând puroiul vâscos. Bacteriile care cauzează puroi sunt numite supurative, pirogenice sau purulente. Dacă agentul creează și mucus, se numește mucopurulent. În ciuda faptului că, în mod normal, are o nuanță alb-gălbui, schimbările de culoare ale puroiului pot fi observate în anumite circumstanțe.
