Tortura
Tortura este actul de a provoca în mod deliberat dureri fizice sau psihologice grave și, eventual, vătămarea unei persoane, de regulă a aceluia care este reținut fizic sau altfel sub controlul sau custodia torturii și nu poate să se apere împotriva a ceea ce li se face. Tortura a fost executată sau sancționată de indivizi, grupuri și state de-a lungul istoriei, din cele mai vechi timpuri până în zilele noastre, iar formele de tortură pot varia foarte mult pe o durată de la câteva minute la mai multe zile sau chiar mai mult. Motivele pentru tortură pot include pedepsirea, răzbunarea, reeducarea politică, descurajarea, interogarea sau constrângerea victimei sau a unei terțe părți sau pur și simplu satisfacția sadică a celor care efectuează sau respectă tortura. Torturarea poate sau nu intenționează să ucidă sau să rănească victima, dar uneori tortura este deliberat fatală și poate precede o crimă sau poate servi ca o formă crudă a pedepsei capitale. În alte cazuri, torturarea poate fi indiferentă față de starea victimei. În mod alternativ, unele forme de tortură sunt concepute pentru a provoca dureri psihologice sau pentru a lăsa cât mai puține vătămări fizice sau dovezi în timp ce realizează aceeași devastare psihologică.
