O placă tote este un afișaj numeric mare sau alfanumeric folosit pentru a transmite informații, de obicei la o pistă de curse sau la un teleton. Termenul "board tote" vine de la colocviala pentru "totalizator", denumirea sistemului automatizat care rulează pariuri parimutuel, calcularea cotelor de câștig, afișarea acestora și producerea de bilete pe baza pariurilor primite. Primul totalizator a fost inventat de William Brownie Garden. Mașina a fost instalată la Ellerslie Racecourse din Noua Zeelandă în 1925, iar cea de-a doua a fost instalată la Gloucester Park Racetrack în Australia de Vest în 1930. George Julius a fondat Automatic Totalisators Limited în 1917, care a furnizat "Premier Totalizator: acum inclusiv componente electrice". Primele totalizatoare instalate în Statele Unite au fost la Hialeah Park, Florida, în 1932, și la cursul de curse Arlington Park, Chicago, în 1933. Primul totalizator electronic total a fost dezvoltat în 1966. Compensatorii au fost înlocuiți de computerele cu scop general care rulează pariuri specializate software precum Autotote.
