Tragacanth este o gumă naturală obținută din seva uscată a mai multor specii de legume din Orientul Mijlociu din genul Astragalus, inclusiv A. adscendens, A. gummifer, A. brachycalyx și A. tragacanthus. Unele dintre aceste specii sunt cunoscute în mod colectiv sub denumirile comune "ghindă de capră" și "vagin". Guma este uneori numită gumă shiraz, shiraz, gumă electrificată sau dragon guma. Numele derivă din tragos și akantha, ceea ce înseamnă în greacă "capră" și "ghimpe", respectiv. Iranul este cel mai mare producător de cea mai bună calitate a acestei gume. Guma tragacanth este un amestec vâscos, inodor, fără gust, solubil în apă, de polizaharide obținute din sapă care este drenată din rădăcina plantei și uscată. Gumele se prăjește din plantă în panglici sau fulgi răsuciți care pot fi pulverizați. Acesta absoarbe apa pentru a deveni un gel, care poate fi amestecat într-o pastă. Guma este utilizată în prelucrarea pieilor în stare de vegetație ca un material de șlefuire și lustruire a marginilor și este uneori utilizată ca material de rigidizare în industria textilă. Alcaloidul pe care îl conține a fost utilizat istoric ca remediu pe bază de plante pentru astfel de stări, cum ar fi tusea și diareea.
