Vedele
Vedele sunt un corp larg de texte originare din India antică. Compuse în sanscrticul vedic, textele constituie cel mai vechi strat de literatură sanscrită și cele mai vechi scripturi ale hinduismului. Vedele sunt apauruṣeya. Acestea ar fi trebuit să fie dezvăluite direct, și astfel sunt numite śruti, distingându-le de alte texte religioase, numite smṛti. În tradiția hindusă, crearea vedelor este creditată lui Brahma. Textele vedice sau śruti sunt organizate în jurul a patru colecții canonice de material metric cunoscut sub numele de Saṁhitās, dintre care primele trei sunt legate de performanța yajnei în religia vedică istorică: ▪ Rigveda, care conține imnuri care urmează să fie recitate de hotar sau prezidându-se preot; ▪ Yajurveda, care conține formule care urmează să fie recitate de adhvaryu sau de preot; ▪ Samaveda, care conține formule care urmează să fie cântate de ugătar sau preot care cântă; ▪ Atharvaveda, o colecție de vrăji și incantații, farmece apotropice și imnuri speculative. Versetele individuale conținute în aceste compilări sunt cunoscute sub numele de mantre.
