Opal este o substanță anorganică din grupul de silice. Acesta acoperă toate soiurile de silice hidratate și gelatinizate. Opal este un coloid; compoziția conține de la 3% până la 13% apă; aspectul este uleios sau sticlos, suprafețele de ruptură sunt similare cu carapacea. Există multe tipuri, dintre care cel mai recunoscut opal nobil. Este folosit ca piatră prețioasă în bijuterii deoarece oferă foarte frumoase corpuri de iluminat de ardere. Diğer opal türleri şunlardır: saydam, yanar-döner, olmayan ve yumrulu yapıda hiyalin; bileşimindeki hidrokarbonlar sebebiyle çeşitli renklerde bulunan çakmaktaşı; yumru veya kabuk şeklinde bulunan kaşolon; hidrofan, menilit, gayzerit veya gayzer silisleri vb.
