Ein Marquess oder Marquis ist ein Adliger von erblichem Rang in verschiedenen europäischen Peerages und in denen von einigen ihrer ehemaligen Kolonien. Der Begriff wird auch verwendet, um äquivalente asiatische Stile zu übersetzen, wie im kaiserlichen China, Japan und Vietnam. Im Vereinigten Königreich liegt der Titel unter einem Herzog und über einem Grafen. Die theoretische Unterscheidung zwischen einer Marquise und anderen Titeln hat seit dem Mittelalter in Dunkelheit verblasst. In der Vergangenheit war die Unterscheidung zwischen einem Grafen und einer Marquess, dass ein Marquessland, genannt Marsch, an der Grenze des Landes war, während ein Land des Landes, genannt ein Landkreis, oft nicht war.
