Odyssee
Die Odyssee ist eine von zwei großen antiken griechischen epischen Gedichten, die Homer zugeschrieben wurden. Es ist zum Teil eine Fortsetzung der Ilias, die andere Arbeit, die Homer zugeschrieben wird. Das Gedicht ist für den modernen Westkanon von grundlegender Bedeutung und ist das zweitälteste erhaltene Werk der westlichen Literatur, wobei die Ilias die älteste ist. Gelehrte glauben, dass es in der Nähe des Ende des 8. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Komponiert wurde, irgendwo in Ionia, der griechischen Küstenregion Anatolien. Das Gedicht konzentriert sich hauptsächlich auf den griechischen Helden Odysseus und seine Heimreise nach dem Fall von Troja. Es dauert Odysseus zehn Jahre nach Ithaka nach dem zehnjährigen Trojanischen Krieg zu erreichen. In seiner Abwesenheit wird davon ausgegangen, dass er gestorben ist, und seine Frau Penelope und Sohn Telemachus müssen sich mit einer Gruppe von widerspenstigen Freiern beschäftigen, die Mnesteres oder Proci, die für Penelopes Hand in der Ehe konkurrieren. Es wird weiterhin im Homerischen Griechisch gelesen und in moderne Sprachen um die Welt übersetzt. Viele Gelehrte glauben, dass das ursprüngliche Gedicht in einer mündlichen Überlieferung von einem Aoidos, vielleicht einer Rhapsode, komponiert wurde und eher dazu bestimmt war, gehört zu werden als zu lesen.
