Schafe sind quadrupedal, Wiederkäuer Säugetiere in der Regel als Viehbestand gehalten. Wie alle Wiederkäuer sind auch die Schafe Mitglieder der Ordnung Artiodactyla, die gleichmäßigen Huftiere. Obwohl der Name "Schaf" für viele Arten in der Gattung Ovis gilt, im Alltagsgebrauch bezieht er sich fast immer auf Ovis-Aries. Numerieren ein wenig über eine Milliarde, Hausschafe sind auch die zahlreichsten Arten von Schafen. Ein erwachsenes weibliches Schaf wird als ein Mutterschaf bezeichnet, ein intakter Mann als Widder oder gelegentlich ein Tup, ein kastrierter Mann als ein und ein jüngeres Schaf als Lamm. Schafe sind höchstwahrscheinlich von dem wilden Mufflon von Europa und Asien abstammen. Eines der frühesten Tiere, die für landwirtschaftliche Zwecke domestiziert werden, werden Schafe für Vlies, Fleisch und Milch angehoben. Eine Schafwolle ist die am weitesten verbreitete Tierfaser und wird gewöhnlich durch Scheren geerntet. Schaffleisch heißt Lamm, wenn von jüngeren Tieren und Hammelfleisch, wenn von älteren. Schafe sind auch heute noch für Wolle und Fleisch wichtig und werden auch gelegentlich für Pelze, als Milchtiere oder als Modellorganismen für die Wissenschaft angehoben.
