Während des siebten und sechsten Jahrhunderts v. Chr. Wurde die Tyrannei oft als Zwischenstadium zwischen enger Oligarchie und demokratischeren Formen der Politik betrachtet. Doch im späten fünften und vierten Jahrhundert entstand ein neuer Tyrann, der Militärdiktator, speziell in Sizilien.
