North Atlantic Treaty Organization, manchmal genannt Atlantischen Allianz ist eine zwischenstaatliche militärische Allianz auf der Grundlage des Nordatlantikvertrags, der am 4. April 1949. Die gemeinsamen Militärausgaben aller Mitglieder der Organisation machen mehr als 70% der gesamten Militärausgaben weltweit aus. Die Verteidigungsausgaben der Mitgliedsländer sollten 2% des BIP überschreiten. Die NATO war wenig mehr als eine politische Vereinigung, bis der Koreakrieg seine Mitgliedsstaaten konsolidierte und eine integrierte militärische Struktur unter der Führung von zwei US-Kommandanten aufgebaut wurde.

Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte, por vezes chamada Aliança Atlântica, é uma aliança militar intergovernamental baseada no Tratado do Atlântico Norte, que foi assinado em 4 de abril de 1949. A organização constitui um sistema de defesa coletiva através do qual seus Estados-membros concordam com a defesa mútua em resposta a um ataque por qualquer entidade externa à organização. A sede da OTAN localiza-se em Bruxelas, na Bélgica, um dos 28 país membros em toda a América do Norte e Europa, sendo que os mais novos associaram-se em abril de 2009. Um adicional de 22 países participam da Parceria para a Paz da OTAN, com 15 outros países envolvidos em programas de diálogo institucionalizado. O gasto militar combinado de todos os membros da organização constitui mais de 70% do total de gastos militares de todo o mundo. Os gastos de defesa dos países membros deve ser superior a 2% do PIB. A OTAN era pouco mais que uma associação política, até a Guerra da Coreia consolidar os Estados-membros da organização e uma estrutura militar integrada ser construída sob a direção de dois comandantes dos Estados Unidos.
