Die Zwiebel ist das latente Stadium bestimmter Samenpflanzen, insbesondere mehrjähriger einkeimblättriger Pflanzen. Es gibt zwei Hauptbirnenarten. Zunächst ist die Tunika, die Zwiebel genannt wird, mit einer dünnen Schicht von Membranblättern wie Papier bedeckt, die ihre fleischigen Blätter schützen. Die andere, auch Glühbirne genannt, hat wie die Lilien Blätter mit einer Schutzschicht, die ihnen das Aussehen geschärfter Schuppen verleiht. Zwiebeln lassen viele Zierpflanzen wie Narzissen, Tulpen und Hyazinthen früh im Frühling gedeihen, wenn günstige Wachstumsbedingungen auftreten. Andere Zwiebelpflanzen blühen im Sommer oder Herbst.

Celălalt, numit și bulb solzos, cum este cazul crinilor, prezintă frunze neacoperite de strat protector, ceea ce le conferă aspectul unor solzi ascuțiți. Bulbii le permit multor plante ornamentale, cum ar fi narcisele, lalelele și zambilele, să înflorească rapid la începutul primăverii, când apar condiții favorabile de creștere. Alte plante cu bulbi înfloresc vara sau toamna.
