ablaut

Ablaut

Ablaut is called a change of vowel within etymologically related words or parts of words. In the case of the Indo-European languages, the ablaut can be explained by the accent relations in Ur-Indo-European. The term was introduced in 1819 by Jacob Grimm into the linguistic sciences for the designation of the regular change in the vocal of the vowel in the flexion of the Germanic strong verbs. This abyss already goes back to the Indo-European language and still shows its aftermath in most Indo-European languages. A distinction is made between qualitative ablaut and quantitative ablaut. The designation for the abbreviations is not uniform. As a rule, the Indo-European ablaut distinguishes three levels: ▪ Full-scale ▪ Stretching ▪ Reduction.
