chondroblast

Chondroblast

The chondroblast is a cell type capable of forming the cartilage tissue. Chondroblasts are derived from mesenchymal stem cells. They produce all the components of the cartilage base substance, such as type II collagen and glycosaminoglycans, and release them to the environment. By continuous formation of this extracellular matrix they separate from their neighboring cells and come into closed cavities. With the adjustment of the matrix synthesis and loss of the ability to divide, they differentiate themselves to the chondrocytes, the actual cartilage cells. The fibroblast growth factor-18 stimulates the formation of cartilage in model organisms with intra-articular injection. A recombinantly produced human FGF-18 is currently undergoing clinical trials for the treatment of osteoarthritis.
