Pastourelle

The Pastourelle, sometimes referred to as a Pastorelle, is a formally simple genre which, in 1150, originated in the Old-Hungarian lyric and was incorporated into other European literatures of the Middle Ages. The theme of Pastourelle is the unhappy meeting of a knight with a shepherdess in the open. In the original version of the genre the encounter with the surrender of the young girl to the socially superior man ended, but other variants were also quickly drawn up, especially those in which the man did not reach his goal. The oldest traditional pastourelle is from the Occitan poet Marcabru; The flowering period of the genus was in the 13th century. The later pastoral poetry of the Renaissance and Baroque does not go back to them, but has ancient roots.
