Abano

Of the DRAE: Apparatus in the form of a fan that, hanging from the ceiling, serves to make air, word that comes from the Portuguese, and of which is better known its diminutive, fan. It is a fan or large fan composed of a lightweight frame with feathers or lined with fabric that, hanging from the ceiling, moves manually thanks to a pulley. It worked by moving the ambient air, so that it helped the evaporation of sweat from the skin of the occupants of the room, cooling by adiabatic evaporation. Its date of invention is unknown, but the Arabs used it at the beginning of the 8th century. India did not arrive until the end of the eighteenth century and during the twentieth century was replaced by electric fans. It spread especially among Indo-Portuguese and Anglo-Indians of India. When the English arrived in India they took the indigenous word pankah or punkah The person in charge of the pankah is a culi that receives the specific name of pankawallah.
