In a more restricted sense, a scientist is an individual who uses the scientific method; This meaning was coined by William Whewell in 1840 in Philosophy of the Inductive Sciences. The person can be an expert in one or more areas of science. Scientists are the ones who conduct the research, pursuing a more comprehensive understanding of nature, including the physical, mathematical and social.
