Facies

Facies

It is called facies the set of sedimentary or metamorphic rocks with determined characteristics, whether paleontological or lithologic that help to recognize the sedimentary or metamorphic environments, respectively, in which the rock was formed. Some associations of facies allow to characterize quite accurately the sedimentary environment in which they were formed, like the fluvial detrital facies or the turbidítcas of continental slope. The term facies was coined by the Swiss geologist Amanz Gressly in 1838 and was part of his important contribution to the foundations of modern stratigraphy, which replaced the earlier notions of Neptunism.
