Lisimaquia was an important Hellenistic city in the European Turkey in the extreme northwest of the Thracian Quersoneso, near the bay of Melas. It was founded in 309 a. C. by Lysimachus while preparing for the next confrontation against his enemies. The new city, located on the isthmus, guarded the road from Sestos to North and Thrace. To obtain inhabitants for his new city, Lisimaco destroyed the nearby town of Cardia, the birthplace of the historian Jerome.
