Prion

A prion or prion is an infectious particle made up of a protein called prion, which causes transmissible degenerative neurological diseases such as scrapie, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and bovine spongiform encephalopathy. The prion protein is a pathogenic psialoprotein, which has altered its secondary structure, having an incorrect folding of its tertiary structure. Unlike the rest of the infectious agents, which contain nucleic acids, a prion is only composed of amino acids and does not contain genetic material. The prion, a word coined in 1982 by Stanley B. Prusiner in investigating a series of chronic and irreversible diseases affecting the central nervous system, is an English acronym derived from the words protein and infection. Prions are responsible for transmissible spongiform encephalopathies in a variety of mammals, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans.
