Chromatophores are light-reflecting pigment cells present in the tegument of certain animals. They are largely responsible for the color of the skin and eyes of cold-blooded animals and are created by the neural crest during embryonic development. They are located on the surface of the tegument of certain Amphibians, Fishes, Reptiles, Crustaceans and Cephalopods. The sudden changes in the color of the teguments, visible in some species, are due to chromatophoric variations in size, pigment migration or reorientation of reflective lamellae under hormonal, nervous or mixed control. These color changes are often used as a means of camouflage by homochromy, but can also be triggered by variations in mood, temperature, nature of the local environment, or by stress. The mature chromatophores are grouped into subclasses according to the color they possess when they are illuminated by white light: xanthophores, erythrophores, iridophores, leucophores, melanophores and cyanophores.
