Many Anglo-Saxon writers and critics prefer to use the cumulative term of speculative fiction because of the ever-more frequent contamination of genres.

Fantasy è un genere letterario sviluppatosi dalla seconda metà del XIX secolo, i cui elementi dominanti sono il mito, il soprannaturale, l'immaginazione, l'allegoria, la metafora, il simbolo e il surreale. In questo filone rientrano quelle storie di letteratura fantastica dove gli elementi fantastici non vengono spiegati in maniera scientifica. Prodotto della letteratura di genere la fantasy, nel tempo, ha acquisito spazi nei prodotti veicolati dai mass media, anzitutto il cinema, quindi i fumetti, i giochi di ruolo, i librogame, la televisione, la radio, i videogiochi e la musica. Nelle arti figurative è rappresentata soprattutto dall'illustrazione fantasy legata al mercato editoriale. Quale genere, la fantasy viene di volta in volta associata o contrapposta agli altri sottogeneri della letteratura fantastica, ossia fantascienza e horror. Vari scrittori e critici anglosassoni preferiscono usare il termine cumulativo di speculative fiction a causa della sempre più frequente contaminazione tra i generi.
