Omayad Mosque 【Omayad Mosque】 Islamic temple in the old city of Syrian capital Damascus. Originally where there was an ancient Roman temple of Jupiter, the emperor Theodosius I of Rome built a church at the end of the 4th century. Early in the 8th century, the Umayya 6th caliph calif, Waleed I was renovated into a mosque. There was a fire at the end of the 19th century, but it was restored afterwards. Inside there is a tomb of John the Baptist, known not only for Muslims but also for Christians as an important pilgrimage site. It is the oldest existing mosque in the world and was registered as a World Heritage (cultural heritage) as "ancient city Damascus" in 1979. Ummay mosque. ウマイヤド‐モスク【Omayad Mosque】 シリアの首都ダマスカスの旧市街にあるイスラム寺院。元は古代ローマ時代のジュピター神殿があった場所で、4世紀末にローマ皇帝テオドシウス1世が教会を建造。8世紀初頭、ウマイヤ朝第6代カリフ、ワリード1世がモスクに改築した。19世紀末に火災にあったが、その後修復された。内部には洗礼者ヨハネの墓もあり、イスラム教徒だけでなくキリスト教徒にとっても重要な巡礼地として知られる。現存する世界最古のモスクであり、1979年、「古代都市ダマスカス」として世界遺産（文化遺産）に登録された。ウマイヤモスク。
