Prebenda - the salaries of the clergy not linked to the pastoral duties. A person who derives income from a prebend is called a pre-calendar or prebend. Prebendy was created in the Middle Ages to provide for the maintenance of a non-clerical pastor. This was especially true of the canons of the cathedral chaplains who performed administrative functions in the diocese. Prebendy replaced the earlier community of income of the members of the Chapter. In Poland already in the thirteenth century each canon had its own emoluments, ie the prebend. Prebendy was established on the income of the church, in particular from tithes. They gradually transformed into a special kind of foundation, whose income was attributed to a particular position or office of the church. The number of offices that belonged to the Presidency was also growing steadily, and it was often the honorary offices whose absence was not associated with specific duties. There were real prebend hunters who could collect up to ten of these benefits and secure themselves a substantial income.

Prebenda – uposażenie duchownych niepołączone zasadniczo ze sprawowaniem obowiązków duszpasterskich. Osobę czerpiącą dochody z prebendy zwano prebendarzem lub prebendariuszem. Prebendy powstały w średniowieczu, w celu zapewnienia utrzymania duchownym nieposiadającym dochodów z działalności duszpasterskiej. Dotyczyło to przede wszystkim kanoników kapituł katedralnych sprawujących funkcje administracyjne w diecezji. Prebendy zastąpiły wcześniejszą wspólnotę dochodów członków kapituły. W Polsce już w XIII wieku każdy kanonik miał swoje odrębne uposażenie, czyli prebendę. Prebendy ustanawiano na dochodach kościoła, w szczególności pochodzących z dziesięcin. Stopniowo przekształciły się one w szczególnego rodzaju fundacje, których dochody przypisane były konkretnemu stanowisku czy urzędowi kościelnemu. Liczba urzędów, którym przynależały prebendy również stale rosła i często były to urzędy honorowe, których piastowanie nie wiązało się ze szczególnymi obowiązkami. Pojawili się prawdziwi łowcy prebend, którzy potrafili zgromadzić do dziesięciu takich beneficjów i zapewnić sobie w ten sposób znaczne dochody.
